You might find yourself contemplating teeth whitening treatments if you are unhappy with the color of your teeth. It can be a difficult decision given the many over-the-counter teeth whiteners that are available at grocery stores and drug stores. Things become even more complicated if you have restorations, like dental crowns.
Oral restorations, like dental crowns and veneers, have their white color "baked in." As a result, teeth whitening treatments do not affect them. That means you do not want to use OTC products if you have oral restorations since you will end up with teeth that are whiter than your crowns.
Most dentists prefer to perform teeth whitening treatments before installing oral restorations like crowns. That way, the crowns can be color-matched with the new color of the patient's teeth.
Patients who already have crowns and are thinking about getting teeth whitening treatments will be better off having their restoration replaced after their treatment so it blends in. It should be noted that crowns that are used to cover up teeth in the back of the mouth that are not visible when the person smiles do not need to be swapped out.
The process of getting whitening treatments if you have a dental crown is no different from the standard procedure. The dentist makes a customized mouth tray with an impression of the patient's mouth and that is used to evenly apply the whitening product to their teeth. Each whitening session will last an hour or less, and patients should see noticeable results – up to eight shades whiter – after every session.
Once the desired shade of white has been reached, the dentist will give the patient up to two weeks for their teeth's new color to stabilize. The patient can then go back to the dentist to have any visible crowns replaced with one that matches their new color.
With a baseline established, the patient will be able to get new whitening treatments in the future since their crowns are already the target shade of white they want their teeth. Future whitening treatments will aim to maintain that color.
Teeth are constantly bombarded with all sorts of things that stain and discolor them. That does not stop after getting whitening treatments. Patients are advised to avoid foods and beverages that can discolor their teeth for their first few days after their whitening treatment. These include:
