Can an Invisalign Dentist® Fix My Crooked Teeth?

Invisalign Dentist Atlantis, FL

If you have crooked teeth, then you may have considered seeing an Invisalign® dentist. This dentist specializes in using Invisalign to fix crooked teeth. Whether your teeth are misaligned, crooked or protruding, Invisalign can help. Invisalign aligners look similar to retainers or the trays that are used to whiten teeth.

What are Invisalign aligners?

The Invisalign aligners will fit snugly over the patient’s teeth. Over a period of time, these aligners will slowly move the teeth into the right position. The length of time will depend on the individual patient. Generally, a patient will wear Invisalign aligners for about six months to a year. The patient will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks before moving on to the next one. Each set of aligners will move the teeth about a quarter of a millimeter each time.

Because each set of aligners builds on the previous set of aligners, it is important that patients wear each set of aligners for the recommended time each day. This is usually about 22 hours a day, which allows two hours for eating and cleaning the teeth. One common misconception about Invisalign is that it can only straighten teeth that are slightly crooked. However, Invisalign aligners can actually straighten teeth, no matter how crooked they might be.

How does an Invisalign dentist fix teeth with Invisalign?

To start with, the Invisalign dentist will take impressions of the patient’s teeth. These impressions will then be sent off to the Invisalign company that will digitally scan the impressions. Technicians can then use special software to move the teeth around on the computer. Each time the teeth are moved, a new set of aligners will be created.

The technician will then send this information back to the Invisalign dentist. If necessary, the dentist can make any minor changes to the digital models. Finally, the technician can have each set of aligners created. All of these sets of aligners are then sent back to the dentist, who can give one set of aligners to the patient at a time.

In some cases, a patient may need to wear attachments along with the Invisalign aligners. These attachments are bonded directly to the tooth. This allows the Invisalign dentist to focus on only one tooth if necessary. This may be used if one of the teeth is twisted. Attachments can also be used to pull a tooth down if it has not fully descended from the gum. A patient may wear rubber bands or other orthodontic appliances with the attachments for some or all parts of the treatment.
