Periodontal disease is a serious problem in the U.S. The CDC estimates that half of all adult Americans have some form of the disease. Periodontal disease has also been linked to a number of serious systemic conditions, including heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes. Many people who have the disease don’t even realize it.
At Atlantis Dental Care, we want to be part of the solution. At every appointment, we will screen you for symptoms of periodontal disease, and if we identify them, we will recommend appropriate treatment for this chronic infection.
When periodontal disease is caught early, we can often reverse it simply by helping you improve your home hygiene routine and adding antimicrobial products. We may also recommend that you return to our office for professional cleanings more frequently, so we can stay on top of the condition.
If the disease has progressed, more aggressive therapy will be necessary. A deep cleaning treatment, which we refer to as scaling and root planing, will remove disease-causing bacteria from beneath the gumline and help prevent them from returning.
We may also recommend surgery in advanced cases to reduce the pockets around your teeth and help your gums fit more snugly.
Common symptoms of periodontal disease include swollen or tender gums, red gums, bleeding when you brush or floss, receding gums, and chronic bad breath. If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to give us a call. We’ll help you get your health back on track.
